One Super League side have cancelled this weekend’s scheduled friendly in a bid to protect their players following a tough fixture.
Wakefield Trinity have confirmed that they will not take on Championship outfit Doncaster this Sunday as scheduled on account of the “tough fixture” against Super League rivals Castleford Tigers last Friday.
Trinity took on their local rivals Castleford on Friday 24th in Luke Gale’s testimonial match with Wakefield running out as comfortable 32-8 victors.
They were scheduled to play Championship side Doncaster this weekend on Sunday, February 2nd but the Super League outfit have now confirmed that has been cancelled.
Sharing a statement on their social media and website, Trinity have provided details on refunds for both tickets and travel whilst club Chief Executive Officer Craig Barrass has made a comment.
The club statement read: “Wakefield Trinity and Doncaster have agreed to cancel their friendly scheduled for Sunday 2nd February.
“Anyone who has purchased a ticket will have their money refunded to them in the next 5 working days via Doncaster.
“Anyone who has purchased travel through Wakefield can contact our retail store in the Ridings Shopping Centre for a refund.”
Barrass added: “We would like to thank Carl Hall and his team at Doncaster for their cooperation on this matter. After a tough fixture on Friday against Castleford and looking ahead over the next few weeks, we felt prioritising protecting our players was key.
“Both ourselves and Doncaster have mutually agreed to cancel the friendly and we are now looking ahead to our Round Three clash with Goole Vikings.”
Goole Vikings defeated London Broncos to set up the clash against Wakefield Trinity with that fixture slated for the weekend of the 8th and 9th of February. They will then travel to Leeds Rhinos for Round One of Super League the following week.
In cancelling their upcoming friendly, Wakefield become the second Super League side to cancel a friendly with Salford Red Devils recently withdrawing from their fixture against Keighley Cougars this past weekend.
The Red Devils had been slated to play a team primarily made of reserves and academy players.
