Super League referee backs strict policing of trolls after being forced off social media

Chris Kendall has spoken out in support of the RFL’s stance to support stronger action from social media companies over the online abuse of sportspeople.

It comes after Kendall reveals how online ‘trolls’ forced the referee to delete his Twitter account towards the back end of the 2020 season.

The RFL sent out an impassioned message on Friday, stating that “Rugby League recognises that its own players, match officials and others involved in the game have themselves been targets for abuse and discrimination.

“This is unacceptable. Rugby League has developed a far-reaching action plan, TACKLE IT Rugby League versus Discrimination, which sets out how the game will extend its reach and appeal, diversify its talent pool, improve its culture and actively deal with all forms of discrimination.”

Kendall tweeted: “A strong but much needed stance from the game. Vile abuse and hatred from keyboard warriors forced me off social media towards the end of 2020. Policing of these platforms has to improve and stronger action must be taken towards the trolls #tackleit.”
