Super League quiz: Name the Champions from every season

In this Super League quiz, we challenge you to name the Super League Champions from every year of the competition since the inaugural season in 1996.

As we know now, the Super League Champions derive from the winners of the Super League Grand Final at Old Trafford in October.

This has not always been the case though, with the first two seasons of Super League in 1996 and 1997 seeing the team finish top of the table crowned Champions. This ‘first past the post’ structure was changed though in 1998.

Super League announced the introduction of the play-offs, with the top six teams competing in a standalone knockout competition at the end of the regular season. The winners of the play-off series would be crowned league Champions at Manchester’s ‘Theatre of Dreams’ Old Trafford.

This change saw the team that topped the table at the end of the regular season awarded the ‘League Leaders’ Shield’ and a home semi-final, with a favourable route to Old Trafford. The top two teams were also afforded a ‘second chance’ if they lost against the two winners of the qualifying semi-finals between the teams from third to sixth.

We have seen many changes to the play-off structure through the years, including a top-eight play-off system for several seasons. We are now back to the top six. The system now sees the teams from third to sixth play each other, with the winners progressing to play the top two in the semi-finals. There are no second chances these days for the top two, instead, they are afforded a week off and home advantage.

Over the years the play-off structure has come under scrutiny, particularly when the competition was won twice from fifth position in the 2011 and 2012 seasons by the same team. Despite this, the play-offs remain in place, with the team victorious at Old Trafford in the Grand Final often one of the two teams that finished first or second in the regular season table.
