Super League quintet including Leeds Rhinos star named in Fiji World Cup training squad

Five Super League players have been named in Fiji’s extended 40-man squad ahead of next month’s Rugby League World Cup, with the standout star from Super League being Leeds Rhinos’ Maika Sivo.

Sivo has 29 tries in Super League this season, his second year in England although he missed the whole season in 2025 due to injury, but he’ll get his chance to represent his nation this year.

Of course, the 40-man extended squad will be whittled down but Sivo will almost certainly be named if fit, and he’s one of five Super League players – all of whom are outside backs.

Castleford Tigers pair Semi Valemei and Jason Qareqare are both named, as well as Bradford Bulls’ centre Waqa Blake, with the fifth man being Huddersfield’s Taane Milne who plays at centre for the Giants but has been used in the second-row at international level.

Fiji will be led by head coach Wise Kativerata and he’s picked the 40-man squad that will shorten up to a final squad that will compete at the tournament in October and November.

NRL standouts feature plenty in the squad and plenty of them are also backs with Jahream Bula and Sunia Turuva among the major names, whilst forwards such as Kurt Donoghoe, Viliame Kikau and Jacob Saifiti have also been named.

Fiji will begin their tournament on October 18th when they face the Cook Islands before two very tough games against Australia and then New Zealand. The Bati will have to place in the top two of Pool A in order to qualify for the semi-finals, where they could meet one of; England, Lebanon, Samoa, France, Papua New Guinea or Tonga.
