Some Wigan Warriors players have already started pre-season training as they prepare themselves for the start of the 2025 Super League season. The Cherry and Whites’ 2024 campaign came to an end just over three weeks ago as the club beat Hull KR in the Grand Final at Old Trafford on October 12.
Their win over the Robins saw them complete a historic quadruple with Matt Peet’s side winning every trophy possible over the course of the calendar year. How Wigan build on that level of success is tricky, but it seems focuses have already turned to the new campaign, which isn’t due to start until mid-February.
Of course, those first-team players who were heavily involved at the Brick Community Stadium last season won’t be expected to return to training for a few more weeks yet. However, with the Cherry and Whites opting for a staggered return to Robin Park, some players are already in and training.
They’ll be joined by most of Peet’s regulars in due course, while those who have been involved on international duty will return at an even later date.
With November now up and running, Wigan aren’t the only club in training this week. John Cartwright will be getting to work at Hull FC this week after picking up the head coach reins at the MKM Stadium.
He’ll expect to see most of his first-team group at the club’s training base, including all but three of his new signings with John Asiata, Aidan Sezer and Jordan Rapana the only players expected in west Hull at a later date.
St Helens are expecting to see their youngsters this week, too, but given Paul Wellens’ side were involved in the play-offs last time around, the senior squad will be given until next week until they return for pre-season training.
Danny McGuire is due to get to work with his players next week, as well, with the new Castleford Tigers boss keen to make his mark after stepping up to replace Craig Lingard.
Sam Burgess isn’t expecting his Warrington Wolves players back into training until November 18 at the earliest, while it will be late November before Hull KR meet up again, with six weeks set to pass between the Super League Grand Final and the start of training.
The Robins won’t be short of motivation either as they prepare to train through the winter after going agonisingly close to winning the league last time around.
Leeds Rhinos players are due in in a fortnight, too, after they were given a sample of pre-season in September by Brad Arthur, who has made it clear how keen he is to get to work.
