Super League reaches its 5000th game next weekend and one game has been selected to be its feature piece event.
Next Friday evening (28th) will see Warrington Wolves v Leeds Rhinos as Super League’s official 5000th game.
Initially, it was to be shared with Leigh Leopards v Wakefield Trinity, with both games kicking off slightly later at an unconfirmed time.
However, following a meeting with RFL chiefs on Wednesday afternoon, the Leopards have agreed to push their kick-off back to 8:05pm.
Both Leeds and Warrington have featured in every Super League season so far, making it a fitting game to be so significant. Super League kicked off on 29th March 1996 when Sheffield Eagles travelled to Paris Saint-Germain, with the French side grabbing a 30-24 victory in game one.
Warrington Wolves v Leeds Rhinos will be played nearly 29 years to the day since that very first game. Whilst many teams have been and gone from Super League (and the rugby league landscape), Leeds and Warrington have been there from the very beginning.
Both teams have somewhat underperformed so far in 2025 so will hope to make this game worthy of being such a landmark game. They have the same record for the season so far, two wins and two losses, but both sides were expected to be fighting at the top this season.
This weekend, Leeds will host Wigan Warriors at home on Saturday early evening whilst Warrington will travel to St Helens on Friday night. If both sides can put in a good performance this week, it will make an even bigger spectacle for the 5000th Super League game next weekend.
In the 30 years of Super League, only four clubs have ever won the Grand Final (St Helens, Leeds, Wigan and Bradford Bulls) but Saints and Wigan have dominated for the last seven years.
In fact, the last winners before that were Leeds in 2017, when they beat Castleford Tigers. There have been 24 different clubs in the competition with seven more sides finishing runners-up in the Grand Final.
