Following Round 23 of Super League, a number of clubs across the division have been left with some fresh injury blows, and they come at a key time with so little time left in the regular season.
Bradford Bulls:
The Bulls perhaps suffered the most injuries of anyone this week, with Kurt Haggerty revealing five concerns following his side’s defeat to Wigan Warriors.
Ebon Scurr missed the game through illness but should be back next week, whilst Phoenix Steinwede failed a HIA in the game, meaning he will miss out. Ryan Sutton has potentially dislocated his thumb, whilst Luke Hooley took a nasty blow to his ankle in the final minutes of the game.
Waqa Blake and Joe Mellor shouldn’t have played this week, per Haggerty, but put their hand up to play due to the lack of other available bodies in the squad.
Castleford Tigers:
Chris Chester revealed that back rower George Hirst was “pretty beaten up” following the win over Hull FC, he took a knock to his ankle during the game.
Catalans Dragons:
No fresh injuries following defeat to Hull KR.
Huddersfield Giants:
No fresh injuries following win over Toulouse.
Hull FC:
Tom Briscoe was rested this week after suffering back spasms as of late. The club will have to manage his return, which could come this week against Catalans.
Hull KR:
Tyrone May was a concern following the win over Catalans, but he has been named in the 21-man squad to face Warrington on Tuesday. Sauaso Sue missed the game against Les Dracs, but returns to face Wire.
Oliver Gildart remains absent, whilst Jordan Dezaria could miss the rest of the season due to a foot injury requiring surgery.
Leeds Rhinos:
Jack Bird failed a HIA in the defeat to Leigh Leopards, meaning he will sit out of this week’s trip to York. James McDonnell didn’t feature for the Rhinos after a pec injury that Brad Arthur believes could see him sit out until Round 27, which is the same potential return date for Maika Sivo and Keenan Palasia.
Leigh Leopards:
Adrian Lam’s side didn’t pick up any injuries at Headingley, but they could still find themselves without some key men, with a number of players sweating this afternoon’s disciplinary verdict.
St Helens:
Winger Lewis Murphy’s rotten injury luck continues, with the former Wakefield man going off with a quad injury at the weekend after his try double.
Toulouse Olympique:
Half-back Jake Shorrocks went down untouched in the defeat to Huddersfield. That is never usually a good sign for players, with the early signs pointing to a potential Achilles injury. Rob Butler and Louis Grossemy also failed HIAs.
Wakefield Trinity:
It was a horror weekend for Wakefield, who lost star man Tom Johnstone in the lead-up to the game against St Helens. He will go for scans today [Monday] to determine the extent of the knock.
In the game, Josh Rourke and Isaiah Vagana both left the field due to knee and shoulder injuries respectively. Vagana could miss the rest of the season, and that is even more of a blow after Seth Nikotemo‘s unexpected departure earlier in the week.
Warrington Wolves:
No fresh injuries following win over York.
Wigan Warriors:
No fresh injuries following win over Bradford. Patrick Mago left the field for a HIA, but passed and returned.
York Knights:
Prop Paul Vaughan left the field for a HIA in the first half, he reportedly passed the test, but then didn’t return and was changed into training gear before the match was over. Outside back Nikau Williams also looked to suffer a leg injury in the game.
