Super League-linked NRL centre secures release as 2027 decision made

Super League-linked centre Adam Pompey has secured an exit from New Zealand Warriors in order to pursue a move for 2027, however, it seems that he will be remaining in the NRL.

Reports emerged in early September that Pompey was free to speak with rival clubs despite being contracted for the 2027 season with the Wahs.

According to The New Zealand Herald, Pompey had options in both the NRL and Super League with the 28-year-old someone who has been linked with a move to England previously.

He has now been released by the Warriors though the club have confirmed in their statement that Pompey will link up with a club in Australia, thus ending any speculation that he might move to Super League.

An experienced outside back who had played over 130 NRL matches, Pompey would have been a very strong addition for most Super League clubs but his talents will remain down under for next year.

A statement from the Warriors, who lost during last week’s controversial play-off clash against Newcastle Knights, announced the end of his time at the club.

It read: “One New Zealand Warriors centre Adam Pompey has been granted a release from the last year of his contract to continue his NRL career in Australia.

“The 28-year-old, who made his debut as Warrior #237 in 2019, departs after eight seasons with the club.”

General manager of recruitment, pathways and development, Andrew McFadden, commented: “Adam has performed consistently for us since his arrival in 2019.

“We appreciate the contribution he has made in his time here and wish him and his family the very best for what lies ahead for them in Australia.”
