Anthony Milford will not be making a move to Super League for the 2025 campaign. The half-back was strongly linked with a move to the Northern Hemisphere, with reports Down Under claiming a Super League club would be his likely destination following his release by the Dolphins.
No club was specifically credited with interest, but the suggestion was that Milford had offers on the table from England as he mulled over his next step. His future is now clear, though, with the Samoa international penning a deal with Queensland Cup side Souths Logan Magpies.
The Magpies are a feeder club for Brisbane Broncos, Milford’s former club, and the move gives him the chance to remain in Brisbane, where he has spent much of his career. However, it also brings an end to a 12-season stint playing first grade, with Milford appearing 219 times in the NRL.
The former Queensland representative broke through as a teenager with Canberra Raiders before making the move to the Broncos in 2015. A spent a season with Newcastle Knights in 2022 before helping the Dolphins off the ground in 2023. He is now preparing for a new chapter with the Magpies, where he spent time as a junior.
“It’s a full circle moment for me,” Milford said in a club statement. “Right now I believe this decision feels right for my little family and I.
“I’m grateful for Wayne (Bennett) and the Dolphins for the past two years and I wish Woolfy (Kristian Woolf) and the boys nothing but the best for season ’25. I’m excited to play under K (Karmichael Hunt) and I can’t wait to get to work with the team.”
Magpies boss Hunt said: “We’re very lucky to have someone of Anthony’s calibre sign with us here at the Magpies. Having him in and amongst some of our younger players will be invaluable to my squad.
“His journey is not too dissimilar from mine and how I transitioned my career in 2021, I’m looking forward to mentoring him over the next couple of years.”
