Super League international winger’s horror injury prognosis confirmed

England and Super League stars Wakefield Trinity

Catalans Dragons have today confirmed the extent of the injury suffered by Tom Johnstone in last week’s Super League game against Castleford Tigers.

It was an afternoon to forget for the Dragons, as they were defeated 24-18 by Castleford Tigers at Wheldon Road.

They went 18-0 down early on, and despite bringing it back to 18-18, Tex Hoy’s late try was enough to give Craig Lingard’s side the points.

Tom Johnstone scored a try in the game, after outjumping Jason Qareqare to score his side’s first of the afternoon after a Jordan Abdull kick.

However, his knee was heavily strapped right from the off, and he was given a torrid time by Qareqare for much of the game, being uncharacteristically burned for pace by, admittedly, one of Super League ‘s fastest.

That caused many to ask why Johnstone was even on the field, as he didn’t seem fully fit – and he was down for an extended period on the stroke of half-time, eventually having to be helped off the field.

Now, as feared, the Dragons have confirmed that it is a bad injury.

Today, they shared in a club statement: “Tom Johnstone underwent scans to determine the extent of his injury after leaving the field injured during last Sunday game at Castleford.

“The scans have showed a fracture to the fibula.

“His recovery will determine his availability.”

It is, from this, unclear what the extent actually is, but it is often a number of months that this sort of injury can keep players out for – meaning this could, potentially, be his season over.

This would mean he won’t play again for the side, as he will join up with Wakefield Trinity next season.
