Round 19 of Super League is in the books and it’s fair to say it did not disappoint, with yet more twists and turns emerging over the course of the weekend.
Leigh Leopards got the round underway in style as they outplayed St Helens at the Totally Wicked Stadium to move up to within a point of the top two. The Leopards are the form team in the competition and right now they’ll have the likes of Wigan Warriors and Hull KR looking over their shoulder.
Leeds Rhinos and Wakefield Trinity both got back to winning ways on Friday night as they beat Salford Red Devils and Huddersfield Giants respectively. That was before Hull FC stunned Wigan at the Brick Community Stadium, with John Cartwright’s side putting 32 points on the champions.
Hull KR picked up the points they needed to move four clear at the top of the division, while Castleford Tigers responded to their loss against Salford last week by beating Warrington Wolves at The Jungle. The Tigers have little to play for at this point in the competition but the result was a hammer blow to Warrington’s hopes of making the play-offs.
The round didn’t pass without its injury concerns, though, with a number of players picking up issues over the six fixtures.
Super League round 19 injury concerns
St Helens appeared to come through the contest with Leigh relatively unscathed but Paul Wellens’ side were without Mark Percival, who spent time in hospital last week on a drip. He wasn’t in a condition to play against the Leopards but Wellens will be keen to see him return after the Super League break.
Leigh lost Keanan Brand to a failed HIA in that fixture but given the Leopards don’t play next weekend, Brand should be available to take on Warrington Wolves next time out.
Wigan Warriors were arguably the biggest losers of the weekend with some big questions for them to answer over the coming games. They’ll take on Catalans Dragons on Friday night without Jai Field after the full-back failed a HIA against the Black and Whites. The full-back appeared ready to carry on after hitting his head on the turf in a tackle but the referee showed him a green card and he subsequently failed a HIA.
Wigan also lost Zach Eckersley, who went for a X-ray after picking up a leg injury in the first half of the contest. Catalans Dragons had to take Arthur Romano off against Hull KR with what appeared to be a hamstring injury.
Castleford Tigers’ win over Warrington came at a price as Innes Senior suffered what appeared to be a dislocated ankle towards the end of the contest.
Warrington forward Jordy Crowther dislocated his elbow during the game, too. Remarkably he managed to play on for a couple of minutes but was withdrawn at the break and was seen in the second half with his arm in a sling.
The Wire had to take off Marc Sneyd in the second half, too, with the scrum-half continuing to struggle with the groin issue he picked up against Catalans Dragons.
