The Super League table is beginning to take shape and the 2026 season has already thrown up one or two big surprises.
The fact that world champions Hull KR are propping up the division after three rounds is certainly one of them. Losing to Leeds Rhinos in Las Vegas won’t have caught too many off guard, but the manner of the defeat certainly did with KR being thrashed 58-6 in Sin City.
York Knights pulled off a big shock on Friday night, too, as they beat Hull FC at the MKM Stadium 17-16. The Knights have beaten the two Hull sides now this season and they’re certainly looking capable of picking up more wins as the season progresses.
Wigan Warriors thumped Leigh Leopards 54-0 on Thursday night, while Castleford Tigers picked up their first win of the season as they beat Huddersfield Giants 34-8.
Warrington Wolves and St Helens picked up wins over Wakefield Trinity and Catalans Dragons respectively on Saturday evening, while Bradford Bulls saw off Toulouse Olympique on Sunday at Odsal.
The round didn’t come without its injury issues, though, and here, we take a look at the concerns head coaches will be checking on this week.
Super League injury concerns after round three
Well, Leigh Leopards had a costly evening across the borough in Wigan, as they lost three key men to injury. Matt Davis is the only one ruled out of this week’s game for definite though after failing a HIA.
Adrian Lam will be checking on Joe Ofahengaue, who picked up a calf injury early in the contest, but the biggest concern will undoubtedly be Bailey Hodgson, who hit the deck innocuously in the closing stages of the clash with Wigan with a knee issue. And, after the game, Lam spoke about the possibility of an ACL rupture.
Hull FC were struggling for numbers come the end of Friday’s game with York after seeing three players leave the action and another limp to the final whistle. Aidan Sezer took a finger to the eye in the first half and had to be withdrawn due to double vision. Harvey Barron then pulled up with an ankle injury and Jed Cartwright left the field with another hamstring issue.
There was some concern about Cade Cust late in the game, too, but he made it through.
Zac Woolford took a blow to the head during Huddersfield Giants’ loss to Castleford Tigers and could be set to miss the clash with Hull KR this week. Liam Hood also picked up an issue in that game, taking a blow to the eye.
Wakefield Trinity hooker Tyson Smoothy failed a HIA in the loss to Warrington Wolves and will sit out of round four at least.
Benjamin Garcia was withdrawn on Saturday night against St Helens, while Toulouse Olympique pair Pierre-Jean Lima and Paul Ulberg picked up respective head and back issues against Bradford Bulls.
The Bulls emerged from the clash on Sunday unscathed but Kurt Haggerty has confirmed that Ebon Scurr will miss six weeks with a hamstring tear.
