Super League hooker follows Hull KR forward to Championship club on dual reg

One Championship club have extended the loan deal for a Hull KR forward whilst bringing in another Super League man on a dual registration deal.

Championship side Hunslet RLFC have confirmed two young Super League forwards will be in contention for their 1895 Cup clash on Sunday against Widnes Vikings, following the extension of one loan and their securing of another.

Hull KR forward Zach Fishwick has already been on loan with the Parksiders and they confirmed that deal was extended by a week but they’ve also added a hooker to address a major injury issue.

Huddersfield Giants hooker Thomas Deakin has joined Hunslet on a dual registration deal ahead of this weekend’s 1895 Cup game against Widnes, where he is expected to debut for the club.

Hunslet currently have both Kobe Rugless and Cam Berry on their long-term injury list with Rugless suffering a double fracture to his hand in Sunday’s 38-20 loss to Bradford Bulls.

Fishwick started in that game but he’ll now be joined by fellow Super League youngster Deakin who is expected to rotate with starter Ross Whitmore out of dummy half.

Deakin joined Huddersfield from Sydney Roosters ahead of the 2023 season but the Australian did not count on the overseas player quota, having played previously at youth level in England.

The 23-year-old featured prominently for the Roosters’ New South Wales Cup side in 2023 ahead of his move and has made a total of eight Super League appearances for the Giants so far.

Last weekend, he was the unused 18th man in the loss against Leigh Leopards but it’s expected he’ll be in contention to feature against Widnes this weekend in the 1895 Cup.

Announcing the deal via their website, Hunslet said: “Hunslet RLFC are delighted to announce that Huddersfield Giants young hooker Thomas Deakin has joined the Club on dual-registration.”
