Super League Grand Final team news as Daryl Powell and Sam Burgess offer squad latest ahead of Old Trafford

Sam Burgess Daryl Powell Warrington Wolves Wakefield Trinity

Both Wakefield Trinity and Warrington Wolves are very close to full strength ahead of their meeting at Old Trafford on Saturday, in what is a major positive for both sides.

The two will face off in what is the first Grand Final in Super League history to not feature any of Leeds, Wigan or St Helens, whilst it is the first time in 15 years where clubs who finished first and second haven’t made it to the big dance.

Wakefield toppled league leaders Wigan to get through to the Manchester showpiece, whilst Warrington downed Leeds in a tense affair at Headingley.

Luckily for both sides, no injury concerns emerged from their respective semi-finals, whilst the Match Review Panel didn’t hand out any bans.

Speaking ahead of their respective 21-man squad releases, which will come on Thursday at noon, both head coaches – Daryl Powell and Sam Burgess – explained to the press the latest on their squad, and how they are shaping up ahead of what is the biggest game of each club’s recent history.

Wakefield Trinity and Warrington Wolves bosses issue Grand Final team news

Wakefield boss Daryl Powell is unsure how he can change such a dominant side, after the 17 he selected last week took Wigan by storm and served up a history-making performance.

“We came through okay,” he told BBC Radio Leeds. “That was a pretty tidy performance, so you’d be a brave man to change that team.

“Whether there’s a couple of positional changes [we’ll wait and see], but look, I’m pretty happy with what the boys delivered last week.”

One of those positional switches could come in the halves, with Powell having a decision to make in regards to starting Jack Sinfield or Mason Lino.

When asked by Serious About Rugby League on that dilemma, the Trinity head coach said: “I don’t think it’s been a dilemma. It’s just the way it’s flowed, really.

“Mason got injured, and Jack came in, and it was probably perfect for Jack, really. He got an opportunity, he’s handled everything that’s been thrown at him superbly well.

“He’s had an awesome season, and then towards the back end, I just think I’ve wanted to do different things at different times.

“Truey [Jake Trueman] I felt needed a rest at one point, and that’s the reason why I put him on the bench. I feel like he’s really come back strong since then.

“Jack’s been great, and Mason’s a great finisher, I think. He’s kicked two drop goals in the last few weeks, and they’re always handy, them.

Meanwhile, Burgess is in a similar boat in terms of squad health. “It’s been nice,” he told the media. “We’ve got through the final series unscathed. Everyone is available again, which is nice.”

The boss then hinted that he too could be unchanged for the Grand Final, saying: “It’s always tough this time of year because everyone wants to play. We’re relatively healthy in terms of squad. There are only two or three guys not available, so people are going to miss out, it’s just the way it is.

“I feel we’ve balanced well all year with that. Again, you’ve just got to be really honest. I think all the players are really understanding with it. The guys that have been playing the last couple of weeks have been getting the job done, so it’s hard to change that side.”
