Super League Grand Final pundit predictions as Hull KR face off against Wigan Warriors

Super League

The Super League Grand Final is finally here and it’s fair to say we have the competition’s best going at it this weekend as Hull KR face Wigan Warriors at Old Trafford.

Willie Peters’ east Hull outfit are chasing a treble after winning the Challenge Cup and the League Leaders’ Shield already this season. They’ve been the best side the Northern Hemisphere has to offer so far this year and their trophy haul proves that, but do they have enough in the tank to pick up one last win?

Wigan Warriors have had to watch KR’s success from afar, but they’ve timed their run to the Grand Final extremely well, winning their last six heading into the Grand Final. Have they got what it takes to make history and claim three titles in a row, though?

Those questions will be answered on Saturday night at the Theatre of Dreams. And, ahead of the contest, Serious About Rugby League’s writers have made their predictions for how the Grand Final might pan out.

Revenge or repeat? That’s the main question coming into this one after 2024 and unfortunately for Hull KR I’m favouring the latter. That opinion is based on two factors. Firstly, the way Wigan finished the Super League season compared to how Willie Peters’ side did.

The Cherry and Whites looked to be at their very best as they reached the end of the campaign and booked their spot in the Grand Final, with Bevan French returning from injury in rampant form. Rovers, if we’re honest, limped over the finish line in the regular season before improving to beat St Helens.

Secondly, in a contest that will come down to moments, I believe Wigan have the edge when it comes down to those big game players. French, Jai Field, Harry Smith and co do it time after time after time when the chips are down, while Rovers haven’t reached that point in their development as a team just yet.

It’s repeat then, for me. With Matt Peet’s side making history with a three-peat.

Prediction: Wigan Warriors 20-10 Hull KR

MOTM: Bevan French

Big game players win big games and Wigan Warriors simply have more of those players and that’s before you even take into account these sides’ recent form.

Since defeat to Hull KR in round 22, Wigan have been near untouchable. Leigh threw everything at them last week and Wigan just didn’t budge. In fact, they waited and just punished the handful of mistakes that Leigh did make.

Meanwhile, Hull KR looked far better against St Helens but their form has been rocky in recent weeks. That said, you don’t need to play well or pretty to win a Grand Final but I just don’t think Wigan will allow the Robins an inch, meaning Hull KR would have to be perfect to win and perfect is nigh on impossible.

Prediction: Wigan Warriors 18-4 Hull KR

The determining factor in this year’s Grand Final won’t be Bevan French, it will be Mikey Lewis. Let me explain. We have seen time and time again that French can score in big moments, just take last year’s GF as an example.

Lewis hasn’t had that game-changing performance in a big match yet, but with England selection and a treble on the line, there is more than enough motivation for him to step up and earn his first Grand Final trophy.

However, whilst I have no doubt he can do that on Saturday, I think the French and Field duo will be too strong for the Robins and it will be a three-peat of Super League title wins for the Warriors.

Prediction: Wigan Warriors 11-10 Hull KR

MOTM: Harry Smith

It seems counter-intuitive to describe the league leaders as underdogs for the Grand Final, but Hull KR probably are against Wigan Warriors on Saturday.

The Robins deserved to finish top of the table and also have the Challenge Cup in their cabinet, but Wigan’s form over the past couple of months – since Bevan French returned from injury – has been better.

Hull KR certainly have a chance; the experience of being at Old Trafford last year will help them and their Wembley triumph proved they can win on the big stage, but Wigan are shooting for a third successive Super League title and, the way French and Jai Field are combining, it will take a faultless performance to beat them.

Prediction: Wigan Warriors 11-4 Hull KR

MOTM: Jai Field
