Super League ‘game of the season’ records viewing figures

Warrington Wolves Sam Burgess Super League

The Super League game of the season so far was aired on BBC Two at the weekend and the impressive viewing figures have been announced.

That game was of course Warrington Wolves hosting St Helens with Sam Burgess’ side progressing after extra time via golden point in the thrilling 23-22 victory.

Dubbed by many as the ‘game of the season’, it was a match that encapsulated everything that play-off rugby league should be about and showed just how good our sport can be.

Most importantly, it was a game that was broadcast live on the BBC and therefore free-to-air and available for all to watch with Super League given a true primetime slot and it was a match that certainly befitted that.

On occasions this season, the BBC can be questioned for their work to showcase either Super League or the Challenge Cup but the game sold itself on Saturday and it’s now been confirmed just how many people watched it.

Super League classic records impressive viewing figures

The BBC Two viewing figures have been revealed on X (formerly Twitter) by Rugby League On TV with the numbers making for just average reading for Super League.

They report that the average audience was 320,000 with a peak of 368,000. That average represented a 2.8% audience share which is a below-par number.

It is by no means the best that the BBC has produced this season with the Challenge Cup semi-final between Hull KR and Wigan Warriors reaching over 540,000 and an audience share of 9.6%.

However, recent poor showings in terms of game quality and viewing figures mean that Saturday’s game fared better in terms of average audience and will hopefully draw more fans to the sport given how good it was.

The clash between Salford and Catalans at the start of September saw an average of below 200,000, highlighting the improvement that Saturday brought but the BBC will be hoping for a stronger figure when they broadcast Wigan Warriors versus Warrington Wolves on Saturday.

Seriousaboutrl. Yeah ok. You do realise that Wigan Warriors are laying Leigh Leopards. It is not just the BBC that does rugby league a disservice it is also seriousaboutrl.Trash.
