One Super League forward has seen their 2024 season come to an abrupt end after copping a four-game ban following Round 24.
That man is Huddersfield Giants’ prop Fenton Rogers who was sent off in Sunday’s defeat against St Helens. Rogers was shown red just before the break after making head contact with Saints’ winger Tee Ritson.
The red card flipped the game on its head with Huddersfield going on to concede 12 unanswered points in the second half as they would cede their 10-6 lead and lose 18-10.
That victory kept St Helens firmly in charge of their own destiny when it comes to making the Super League play-offs but for Huddersfield, the loss of Rogers for the remainder of the season is far bigger than the defeat on the day.
It means Luke Robinson will see his squad stretched even further for the remaining three games of the season with the Giants battling to keep hold of ninth place from Castleford Tigers.
Huddersfield forward cops four-game ban ending his Super League season
Rogers hasn’t just been banned for the remainder of the season but he will also miss the first game of the pre-season for Huddersfield after copping a four-game ban.
It’s actually two separate bans that have been handed to the 21-year-old with his red card offence carrying a Grade D charge of ‘Head Contact’ and warranting a three-match ban, whilst he has also been hit with a Grade B ‘Dangerous Contact’ charge which has drawn a one-match ban.
Moreover, Huddersfield have seen Sam Hewitt banned for one game after the forward landed a Grade B ‘Dangerous Contact’ charge of his own.
It leaves Robinson short on options in the pack for his side’s game against London Broncos on Sunday afternoon, a game that he will consider must-win if they’re to hold off the charging Tigers for ninth place on the Super League ladder.
After the Match Review Panel gave their verdict, Huddersfield Giants confirmed their suspensions with a post on social media.
It read: “Fenton Rogers has been given two separate charges, Grade B Dangerous Contact and Grade D Head Contact meaning he will serve a total 4-match penalty notice. Sam Hewitt also received a Grade B charge for Dangerous Contact and will serve a 1-match penalty notice.”
The pair were two of five Super League players banned alongside Sylvester Namo (two games), Liam Horne (one game) and Paul Vaughan who also copped a three-game ban after his red card in Round 24.
