Magic Weekend is a brilliant event in the Rugby League calendar as fans from all the different Super League sides, and even lower league teams, attend one stadium with next to no trouble.
Sadly, that wasn’t the case last weekend with reports from Rugby League Live confirming that four arrests were made as fights erupted on day two of the event.
Day Two of the event had already gone down in history as the lowest-ever attendance on a Sunday with the combined figure of Saturday and Sunday marking the second-ever-lowest attendance.
However, news of fighting had spread on social media and it’s been confirmed that arrests were made after an incident in the closing stages of the game between Catalans Dragons and Hull KR.
Hull KR won that game handily but it seems that as Castleford fans began to filter in to watch the finale between the Tigers and Huddersfield Giants, issues began to arise.
Four arrested after fights at Super League clash
According to Rugby League Live, four men were arrested on suspicion of affray with one of those being released without charge whilst three were held in custody.
Supporters were escorted from the stadium for their part in the fighting and West Yorkshire Police provided Rugby League Live with a statement confirming arrests were made following the incident.
Their statement read: “At about 5.45 pm yesterday, officers involved in the policing operation for the rugby league Magic Weekend at Elland Road stadium responded to a fight in the North Stand involving a handful of supporters of Castleford Tigers and Hull KR.
“Officers supported stewards to separate those involved and brought the incident to a swift conclusion. There were no reports of any serious injuries.
“Four men were arrested on suspicion of affray in relation to the incident. One was later released without charge and three remain in custody,” the statement from Monday concluded.
