In just over 24 hours, Magic Weekend will be kicking off with every single Super League side set to play in the same venue in the space of two days.
It should be a celebration of rugby league but fan expectation for the 2024 edition of Magic Weekend is not high with many very upset about the event.
It will mark the 17th edition of Magic Weekend but the games will be played in a new venue, the sixth different venue to host the showpiece event.
Elland Road in Leeds is the home for Magic Weekend in 2024 marking a shift from the recently-adopted home of St James Park in Newcastle.
Newcastle has held the event on seven of the 16 occasions so far including in every season since the cancelled 2020 edition, however, with the event being pushed later in the season St James Park was unavailable.
Fans have now aired their grievances about that with expectations low for this season’s edition of Magic Weekend.
Fans fume over Magic Weekend location
Responding to a post on Serious About Rugby League’s social media, fans began to air their grievances with the upcoming two-day event.
One said: “Newcastle every time!!!!”
That was echoed by another who criticised the selection of Elland Road, noting: “Newcastle every time. Nothing for that volume of fans at ER.”
Others were already looking ahead to 2025: “Let’s see but I think it will be the worse attended ever, home of Magic is Newcastle and the RFL should be doing their best to get it back their for next year.”
One fan was more positive, adding: “I don’t care where it is, it’s all about enjoying yourself and making the most of it instead of moaning.”
The event’s clash with the opening weekend of the Premier League season was noted by another who labelled it “terrible planning”.
They said: “Terrible planning by the rfl. Let’s have our showcase event over the weekend the premier league returns to ensure we get a little media coverage as possible.”
The consensus was clear though: “Good concept that to us was a highlight of our Season in Newcastle. Ruined by moving it to Leeds.”

Bit of a lame duck in Leeds. Fans could not move around or sit where they wanted, all separated.
Fan zone was a blink and you’d miss it affair. Very lame and boring.
Having most of the top teams on day one, made day 2 and anticlimax. Low turnout.
