Super League export named as 2025 NRL ‘breakout star’

Lewis Dodd celebrates with Alex Walmsley and James Bell after scoring a try for St Helens in Super League

Former St Helens man Lewis Dodd has been named as a potential breakout NRL star in 2025. Dodd left the Totally Wicked Stadium at the end of the 2024 Super League season after signing a deal with Australian giants South Sydney Rabbitohs.

The 22-year-old has signed a three-year deal with Wayne Bennett’s side, who will be looking to make strides forward after finishing 16th in the NRL ladder last season. Dodd is one of four signings made by Souths for the 2025 season with Jamie Humphreys, Euan Aitken and Josh Schuster joining the club, too, and he’ll be hoping to nail down the Bunnies’ number seven jersey and kick on.

That’s after what was a difficult final season with the Saints in Super League. Paul Wellens’ side failed to find traction for large periods through 2024 and with the club struggling with injuries and form, Dodd found himself dropped.

He was brought back in for the club’s final three games of the season, but he couldn’t help the Merseyside outfit progress further than the first play-off round.

Dodd will be in a determined mood as he makes the switch Down Under then and Fox Sports are backing him to hit the ground running in New South Wales. Named as a potential breakout star, here’s what was written about the former St Helens man: “Lewis Dodd is yet to feature in the NRL, signing with the Rabbitohs from the Super League ahead of the 2024 season.

“Dodd, 22, has been a consistent figure for St Helens since making his debut in 2020. He also kicked a match-winning field goal to down the Panthers in the 2023 World Club Challenge, however it remains to be seen if he has what it takes to handle the step up to the NRL.

“Dodd is set to wear the No.7 under Wayne Bennett to start the season for the Rabbitohs, who struggled immensely throughout the 2024 season. With Cody Walker shifting back to his natural five-eighth position, Dodd will assume the organisational duties and the Englishmen has a massive job on his hands at the helm for South Sydney. So will he sink or swim? We’re backing the import to have a successful first season in Australia.”
