Warrington Wolves and Wakefield Trinity will be hoping that this week’s Super League disciplinary verdict contains none of their players as the Super League Grand Final looms.
The Match Review Panel will release their findings later today, and it will reveal whether any players have been banned, fined or charged. Remember, points are frozen for the play-offs, meaning that every player started the finals with no points, so would need a significant charge to warrant a ban.
Whilst no big charges are expected to be handed out, a number of players could still be in line for punishment, and that includes players from beaten semi-finalists Leeds Rhinos and Wigan Warriors.
In terms of players sweating this week’s findings, we start at Headingley, where Ewan Irwin’s penalty goal proved to be the difference in a 14-12 win. However, prop Liam Byrne was penalised twice for a high tackle, on Matt Lodge and Riley Lumb respectively.
The Rhinos themselves have a couple of sweats: Harry Newman caught Matty Ashton in the air, before Matt Lodge hit George Williams late. Both incidents were penalised at the time.
Moving on to Wakefield’s remarkable win over Wigan, and one player from each side was sent to the sin-bin, the first being Trinity’s Jazz Tevaga. The Samoan international was done for a trip, but boss Daryl Powell thought the yellow card was “harsh”.
In the second half, Wigan centre Adam Keighran made a dangerous and late tackle on Isaiah Vagana. The back rower had offloaded the ball, unbeknownst to the Man of Steel nominee, and he continued with the tackle that put the Wakefield man over the horizontal.
