Stars of St Helens and Wigan Warriors will be among those sweating the possibility of disciplinary action and bans after Round 23 of Super League.
A week on from Magic Weekend and Super League was back to its best with some brilliant match-ups and stellar performances, however, there was also some disciplinary issues with seven yellow and one red card being brandished.
The action began on Friday night when Leeds Rhinos kept their playoff hopes alive by beating Catalans 18-6 whilst Warrington Wolves saw off Castleford 28-6 at The Jungle.
Saturday saw two huge results as Hull KR hammered St Helens to certify their Super League title credentials, whilst Salford ran in ten tries to beat Huddersfield Giants 60-10. The Robins’ 42-6 win over Saints saw the Red Vee cop a yellow and a red card meaning they’ll be one of the sides stressing today’s disciplinary verdict.
The round concluded on Sunday with Super League’s bottom sides London and Hull losing once again as Leigh and Wigan beat them respectively. Leigh’s 32-12 win sees them go within a point of the playoffs, whilst Wigan won 22-4 to keep level with Hull KR at the top of the competition..
With just four games of the Super League season to go, bans could have huge repercussions but several sides will be nervously awaiting the outcome of today’s disciplinary meeting.
Round 23 Super League disciplinary concerns
The most obvious concern is for St Helens’ Tommy Makinson who was sent off late on against Hull KR. The veteran winger jumped into a tackle on Tyrone May and made contact with the head of the playmaker which saw him controversially sent off.
Earlier in that game, centre Waqa Blake had copped a yellow card for a high tackle as well meaning St Helens could be without two senior players for their upcoming game against Huddersfield Giants.
Wigan’s Patrick Mago was one of three Super League players to be sin-binned for a late hit alongside John Asiata and Rob Butler with the disciplinary verdict on all three set to be interesting.
Luke Yates and Andre Savelio were sent for ten after high tackles whilst Savelio’s teammate Olly Russell’s professional foul earned him ten minutes in the bin.
The Match Review Panel will determine the fate of all those men and any others who committed misdemeanours when they release their findings later today.
