Super League cult hero takes on new role Down Under

A Super League legend has landed a new role Down Under that will see him help develop coaches and lift coaching standards.

Stanley Gene is a name that is familiar with lots of rugby league fans with Gene being somewhat of a cult hero during his time in Super League, both as a player and then whilst working as a coach.

The Papua New Guinean who was infamous for his toughness played 179 games in Super League, spending the majority of his career with Hull KR and Huddersfield Giants but also representing Hull FC.

Gene also worked at Hull KR as a coach under Tony Smith and Hull FC but it’s been confirmed that his new role is back in Papua New Guinea.

It’s confirmed that a team from PNG will join the NRL with the idea to grow the standards of the game in the nation and part of that is what Gene’s new role involves.

He has been appointed as the Coach Development Manager for the PNG Rugby Football League with the role set to see him work with clubs and coaches to help raise standards in the Pacific island nation.

Speaking on his opportunity, he told One PNG: “This is an incredible chance to support our local coaches and help them grow. I’m eager to get out there and start making a difference.”

Specifically in 2025 his role will see him work with coaches in the DigiCell ExxonMobil Cup whilst also developing a ‘Talent Identification Program’ that is targeted to nurture aspiring coaches.

PNGRFL CEO Stanley Hondina said: “Having someone of Stanley’s caliber join us is a significant boost for PNG rugby league. His experience in the Super League and academy systems will greatly benefit our clubs and coaches.

“Stanley’s illustrious playing career and unwavering dedication to representing our nation make him an invaluable asset. Having him back in the country to serve the PNGRFL is a tremendous opportunity for everyone involved in the game.”

Gene last played in Super League in 2009 with Hull KR placing fourth that season. He’d spend one year with Halifax before calling time on his playing career.
