Super League coach throws spanner into works of reported transfer

Transfers are on everyone’s lips lately with Wigan Warriors making waves bringing in former Leeds Rhinos and Huddersfield Giants star Kruise Leeming as well as his former teammate Sam Walters from the Rhinos whilst Tiaki Chan also makes the move. Meanwhile, Hull KR were the quickest to act in the transfer market drafting in former Warrington Wolves star Peta Hiku, former Castleford Tigers target AJ Wallace from Bradford Bulls and of course Oliver Gildart.

But there are plenty more rumours doing the rounds at the moment such as a number of names being linked with Leigh Leopards.

The Leopards have been linked with the likes of Huddersfield Giants forward Owen Trout who has played his last game for the Giants due to injury.

It seems they are in the market for forwards and are expected to sign St Helens star Dan Norman in 2024.

But Paul Wellens has pushed back against these suggestions.

“Everything’s a possibility. Obviously Dan has been on loan at Leigh for a couple of weeks,” Wellens stated on Saints TV.

“I sat down with Dan before he went and discussed about it being a chance for him to go and play rugby at Super League level whilst he wasn’t making our 17 at the time.

“I’m sure those conversations have continued to happen. His representatives will be in dialogue with the club over what he wants to do moving forward and whichever way it goes, it will come to an amicable conclusion.

“Dan is a great lad. He’s been fantastic since he’s come through the doors here and he’s a real likeable character and well-liked member of the group.

“In that sense I couldn’t speak any higher of him.”

When asked if the door is still open for him at Saints, Wellens said: “Yeah and what happened with Dan was that he picked up an injury a number of weeks ago and that set him back.

“There were probably periods when we were missing players that he would have got games but he wasn’t available either and the likes of George Delaney have come in, got an opportunity and shown what he can do so it’s just limited Dan’s chances.

“Dan’s challenge is to get back on the field, get some minutes and show what he can do.”
