Super League coach teases major signings

Leeds Rhinos, Wigan Warriors, Warrington Wolves and Hull KR have all announced signings for the 2024 season and now Hull FC have joined the fun.

This week they announced the signing of Dolphins loose-forward Hermen Ese’ese.

He is the nephew of former Leeds Rhinos star Ali Lauiti’iti and was linked with the likes of Warrington Wolves but Hull FC won the race to sign him for next year as Tony Smith begins a revamp of the club’s pack.

Speaking of which, Smith spoke about the signing on BBC Radio Humberside:

“Yeah, he’s big and he’s experienced and he wants to develop his leadership. He’s got some leadership skills but he wants to further that as well and he’s certainly got some skills.

“I think Super League and certainly this coach within Super League encourages use of skill and passing and and offloading. Some of those aren’t as encouraged in the NRL. It’s a tighter league in terms of what the forwards are required to do.

“I think he’ll get some freedom here to do and express himself and develop some attributes and some things that he’s capable of. So there’s some development aspects for him, but freedom of it.

“There’s some things that I think we can help him improve on as well. So it’s a two way thing, but he’s going to bring plenty to us and I’m looking forward to that when it happens.”

He also hinted at further signings to come from the NRL:

“But in the meantime, he’s got a job to do at his present club and our guys have got a job to do pre-Herman, but it was nice to get Herman announced and we’ll look forward to some others down the track.

“Yeah, yeah, we’re excited about it. I’m not going to put too much pressure on him and it’s a real good buy for us and a great addition I think he’ll be. We’ll let him do the talking on the field over a period of time.

“We’ll welcome him for a really big pre-season and get himself into best physical shape he can be. I’m sure he’ll be successful within Super League but for us as well. I think he’ll be a big force for us next year and we’ll get a few more around him and that’ll help too.

“We’ve got some good talent here already and as the last few months have shown, we’ve got a lot of people who can compete and compete with some of the best teams in the competition.

“I think with the addition of Herman and a couple of others then it’ll strengthen this for sure.”
