Super League coach says “we have issues within the team”

Pressure is mounting at Wakefield Trinity at the moment.

They have lost their opening nine games, have failed to score in five games and have been unable to score more than one try at least in seven games.

Speaking ahead of their game against Wigan Warriors on Sunday, coach Mark Applegarth has revealed there has been issues within the team and he has had to have conversations to address this.

“We have identified, without going into personal stuff, some issues within the team. Some people probably weren’t doing their job as well as they could,” he said on BBC Radio Leeds.

“We had some pretty brutal and honest conversations that most teams do have after things like that.

“As I said, and my words probably didn’t come across right, I said we need to build a team around efforts of your Lee Kershaws, Jai Whitbreads and others what I meant was they never give up on lost causes.

“You could see how much it meant to them and that has been a focus on video this week, that never say die attitude and making sure we are working hard.”

He also said he will get the club’s poor attack sorted:

“Let’s not forget the elephant in the room, we have to start scoring points.

“The reason we are so frustrated is we can see a defensive intent going in but when you are not seeing any reward for that and in five games you have been nilled and you can see a sense of frustration getting to them.

“So we have been working on our attack and making sure we are clinical in our skill.

“Some of our decision making has not been good enough and we need to get better but as Head Coach I take full responsibility for that and I will get it sorted.”
