Super League coach provides injury update including star player after bizarre injury caused by pothole

Salford Red Devils have a brilliant squad but perhaps its depth is its one weakness.

The Red Devils though have managed without some of their key players in recent weeks and will continue to do so as Paul Rowley confirmed some of their big hitters won’t be back for the clash against St Helens including Ken Sio who bizarrely picked up an ankle injury after falling down a pot hole on the club’s training pitch.

Alex Gerrard though could be back as Rowley said:

“We’re not expecting anyone back except Alex Gerrard will have another week’s training under his belt so he will be putting his hand up to play.

“Tim Lafai and Ken Sio won’t be involved and we will check on Ryan Brierley as the week progresses.”

Brierley picked up a scratch on his eye in the win against Leeds last night similar to the one he suffered in 2021 playing for Leigh Leopards, then the Leigh Centurions.

That put him out for five weeks and Rowley said right now “it’s not looking good.”

After he went off, Chris Atkin went to fullback and Rowley praised his side for how they coped:

“We do practice chaos and people know each other’s positions. Losing any of our spine and losing Ryan today is a massive blow because they are such good players and are so important.

“But, you might lose a little quality of that player who is nailed on in that position but the one who steps up does a good job.

“So you lose a little bit but it doesn’t come crashing down because we are well versed and have practiced it many many times.

“We will get through it is our mentality.”
