Super League coach describes latest contest as “clumsy game”

Leeds Rhinos boss Rohan Smith described his side’s win over Hull FC as “a clumsy game” but praised his side their good patches that inflicted Hull FC’s seventh consecutive defeat.

“It was a bit of a clumsy game really all round but we had enough patches there where we showed enough flow with the ball and I thought overall our defence was very good except for a few moments when we chased kicks too hard and we were a little disconnected.”

It was only the second time this season that Leeds went into halftime not trailing but Smith said it didn’t change his side’s approach to the second half, where they have excelled this season:

“It was no different, going into halftime in all but one game it felt like even if the scoreboard wasn’t in our favour the game itself wasn’t that far against us so all we had to do today was emphasise not getting too excited the scoreline.”

After their win over Huddersfield Giants, Smith said his side weren’t a great team yet and he reiterated that point this week:

“We’re still not great, I don’t know if that gets a headline again. It was a different game today. We have plenty in us and we are probably a better defensive team than attacking team at this point.”
