Super League coach claims star “has been the best fullback” recently and calls for England selection

After Ryan Brierley masterminded a memorable Magic Weekend win for Salford Red Devils against Hull KR, Paul Rowley was full of praise for the fullback.

He said that he has been the best fullback on the pitch for the last five or six games and is deserving of an England call-up:

“He’s been the best full-back on the pitch for the last five or six games in all our games. So I said it on Sky, I think we’ve got several people who are quietly letting their actions speak louder than their words, but at some point then you’ve got to start having a look and thinking when it comes to that end of season that there’s some people putting the names up for some selections there, if you know what I mean.

“So you can fill in the blanks there.”

When Brierley was asked about a call up:

“Not particularly no, I think first and foremost I’ve got to play well for this coach more importantly so it’s nice to obviously be involved in that conversation, it’s quite flattering.

“The real success for me is that you actually mention it now. I think if you’d asked me five years ago, I think you were making fun of me. It’s not something I’ve directly spoke about or thought about. It’s nice to be in those conversations, but I think most importantly, I think I’ve got to play well for Salford Red Devils and everything else to take care of itself.

“I think it’s every young boy’s dream to play for England. If you’re born in this country, and I’m no different, ultimately I’ve got full respect for that England set-up, and I’ll pick the right squad for the job.”
