Super League coach calls on youngster to “bounce back” after “big error”

Ian Watson’s Huddersfield Giants came up short yesterday against Hull FC who ended their seven game losing run.

It was 8-all at halftime with Chris Satae giving Hull the lead at the start of the second half. They went on to lead 20-8 before a late Huddersfield try gave them a shot at snatching something.

That try could have meant more had Sam Halsall scored at 14-8 only for the winger to drop the ball over the line.

Speaking after the game on BBC Radio Leeds, Ian Watson called on the young winger to bounce back after the “big error.”

“I think the try in the corner that Sam kind of bombed if you like, I think there was other opportunities we had and we just weren’t decisive in what we were doing,” he said.

“We looked second to everything whereas they were really proactive and I think their efforts got them the result.

“There was a real turning point in the game where obviously with Sam’s try. Their middles looked like they were really struggling and really blowing, we bombed that and they come down the other end and score and that lifts the mood.

He went on to explain what went wrong: “I don’t know, you’d have to ask him. I don’t know if he’s gone to change hands with the ball as he’s going down when to be fair he just needs to fall over.

“Some wingers have them don’t they where they make a mistake like that. For Sam it’s just about bouncing back. It’s a big error in a big position in the game but you learn and grow from them.”
