Super League’s Magic Weekend will be heading to Newcastle for the eighth time, it has been confirmed. The event, which was played at Leeds United’s Elland Road Stadium last year, returns to St James’ Park and will be held over the weekend of May 3rd and 4th.
The home of Newcastle United is a favourite among rugby league fans, with the stadium just a stone’s throw away from a vibrant and lively city centre and the hope is that the weekend will be well-attended once more, 10 years on from the concept’s first appearance in the North East.
The 2024 Super League table has determined the 2025 Magic Weekend line-up of course, with Wigan Warriors vs Warrington Wolves perhaps being the standout tie of the weekend. The quadruple winners will take on Sam Burgess’ side in game two on the Sunday afternoon.
St Helens will play Leeds Rhinos in what promises to be another intriguing encounter between two heavyweight Super League sides on Saturday night while Hull KR, who finished last season as runners up and will be well-supported as always in Newcastle, face Salford Red Devils in the clash before.
Leigh Leopards and Catalans Dragons have both invested heavily over the off-season and they will get the weekend up and running in game one. Hull FC and Huddersfield Giants get Sunday started, while Castleford Tigers and Wakefield Trinity will bring the curtain down on the weekend with Daryl Powell’s Trinity returning to Magic after a year in the Championship.
“We’re excited to confirm this return to St James’ Park and the city of Newcastle for the 18th Super League Magic Weekend in 2025,” Rhodri Jones, Rugby League Commercial’s managing director said.
“The feedback from our fans regarding a return to the North East has been overwhelmingly positive, and we have worked with Newcastle United and Newcastle City Council to identify the May Bank Holiday weekend as the ideal slot.
“The players of Super League have produced so many thrilling matches and moments in the decade since Magic Weekend was first played at St James’, and we look forward to more in 2025.”
Darren Eales, Newcastle United CEO, added: “We are delighted to be hosting Magic Weekend at St. James’ Park once again.
“The stadium and city have proven to be incredibly popular across previous Magic Weekend events, with fans of Super League clubs being joined by many more who are new to the sport.
“Together with our city partners, we look forward to welcoming the rugby league community back to the North East for an unforgettable weekend.”
