The RFL have confirmed that Super League clubs have been made aware of Salford Red Devils’ takeover optimism. A group from overseas has made an approach to purchase the Red Devils and rescue the club from the financial hole they find themselves in on the eve of the new Super League season.
Salford’s finances have dominated the news agenda over the off-season and with the new campaign just a few weeks away, the story is still developing with hope that a takeover agreement can be reached.
The Red Devils were placed under special measures by the RFL at the end of last year after receiving an advance in central funding to plug financial shortcomings. After a deep dive assessment of the club’s finances and outgoings, the governing body directed the club to shave £800,000 off their overheads.
Player sales are the easiest and clearest way of doing that and the club released a statement last week to confirm that members of their first team squad were up for sale. As such, a raft of sides have been linked with Salford players with most of their high profile figures being of interest.
Super League clubs met earlier this week to speak about the situation at the Salford Community Stadium with salary cap or overseas quota dispensation seen as a possibility for those looking to take Salford players in the coming weeks.
However, clubs have now been given a certain degree of clarity on Salford Red Devils’ situation, with a takeover seemingly making progress. Contingency planning will continue, but the RFL have now offered an update.
A short statement issued to the media, including Serious About RL, read: “Clubs have been updated on the position at Salford, including ownership progress, whilst contingency planning goes on in the background.”
Salford are due to be in action this weekend when they take on St Helens at the Totally Wicked Stadium as part of Morgan Knowles’ testimonial.
