Super League club’s fans “verbally beaten up” by away side according to Sky pundit

The Super League season is at an interesting juncture after a vital win for Leeds Rhinos last weekend, Wigan Warriors getting stunned by Wakefield Trinity and a fascinating clash between Warrington Wolves which went alongside Hull FC’s derby win over Hull KR as the two apt Sky games last weekend.

Recent weeks have seen the race for the League Leaders’ Shield blown wide open whilst Leigh Leopards, who are chasing Catalans Dragons at the top, beat Castleford Tigers last week to create real pressure on Andy Last’s men.

This is because now the Tigers are only two points clear of Wakefield Trinity in the relegation battle.

But perhaps the most interesting battle is the race for the top six, the play-off spots and being in contention to reach Old Trafford and the Super League Grand Final.

Last week Leeds’ and Hull FC’s wins propelled them further into this battle. Leeds are now joint seventh with Hull KR two points behind Salford Red Devils in the race for sixth spot.

Many are viewing this as a four way battle to take sixth spot but there has been a suggestion that Warrington Wolves will get dragged into the mix after their poor run of form and difficult fixtures up ahead for Daryl Powell’s men.

On Sky Sports Jon Wells even said they could be “sleepwalking” out of the top six.

This explains a level of unrest amongst the uneasy Warrington fans who in the eyes of Barrie McDermott were “verbally beaten up” by the away section of St Helens fans last week at the Halliwell Jones Stadium.

Saints were praised for bringing a great atmosphere to the game whilst Sky’s pundits noted an uneasiness amongst Warrington fans which slowly dissipated as the Wolves turned on the style and pushed the Champions all the way.

However, late in the match Paul Sculthorpe remarked that it was Saints fans pushing their team home whilst Warrington fans didn’t have the “trust” in their team to believe they would get the win.

The Wolves are set for another big game this weekend as they take on rivals Wigan away.
