Super League club want to play fixture in Papua New Guinea

Leigh Leopards are headed to Wembley to take on Hull KR in the Challenge Cup Final on the back of a win over Leeds Rhinos at the weekend.

In that game Edwin Ipape scored the opening try ducking and weaving his way over the try to take the lead and in a game with only three tries, it was crucial.

Ipape is in electric form and is perhaps the best hooker at present and he will be ready to go at Wembley.

Speaking about Ipape on the Leeds’ YouTube channel, coach Adrian Lam said:

“Yeah, he missed the week before as well. So, you know, I played him a little bit more time that one or two today, just so that he could get the load up for next week.

“He’s a massive part of our team and where he’s going to get to in the next year or two is potentially world class.

“He’s working hard every week, he’s also getting smarter as a player and he’s got leadership in him too which is fantastic so he’ll be a big part of our team next week.”

Ipape along with Lachlan Lam and Adrian Lam have created a PNG connection and there is great support for the club in PNG and Lam has emphasised a desire to take the Leopards to PNG for a game in the future:

“Yeah, they’ve got right behind us from the very start to be honest. It would be probably worth us travelling there and playing a game or something friendly at some stage. I think that would be good.

“I’ve talked to Derek about that and he’s pretty keen about it. So that may happen early next year or the year after.

“But it’s just nice to know that support is coming from afar. For him away from home, he’s loving it here so I don’t think he’ll be going back home, so we’ll see. Certainly not the NRL in Australia anyway for now.”

Though the club may fancy a game in PNG, the club will be first and foremost focused on a trip to Wembley.
