Super League club shareholder completes huge takeover of football club

After a difficult season, former Premier League club Wigan Athletic have now been relegated to League One.

There has been financial pressure on the club but things are starting to get better with a takeover set to be completed.

Wigan Warriors share holder Mike Danson has led the takeover. He owns a 25% stake at the Warriors.

This also means that Wigan’s DW Stadium have new owners as well with Wigan Athletic’s previous owners having ownership of the Stadium.

Thus, with the Takeover underway, the new buyers will become the new owners of the stadium though Wigan Council are still the landowners.

The pitch at the DW has been re-laid following the end of the football season.

It is ready for Sunday’s Challenge Cup clash between Wigan and Warrington Wolves.

They haven’t played at home since they lost 40-18 to 12 man Leeds Rhinos earlier this season.

That was over a month ago so the cup presents an exciting homecoming.

Wigan are the current holders of the trophy whilst Warrington will be dreaming of Wembley too.

The winner will enter the last four of the competition.

The last time neither of these sides were in the final four was back in 2008.

Thus this 15 year record will continue.
