Super League club set for major transfer

St Helens star Will Hopoate

Clubs like Leeds Rhinos, Wigan Warriors, Warrington Wolves, Hull FC, Hull KR and Huddersfield Giants have all completed major signings from the NRL.

The likes of Matt Frawley, Lachie Miller, Lachlan Fitzgibbon, Herman Ese’ese, Franklin Pele, Peta Hiku and Jack Murchie have all signed for Super League clubs and more are expected.

Using quota spots well are key to success and now St Helens have one hinting towards a major signing for the 2024 season.

This is because Will Hopoate has left the club leaving open a quota spot for them to utilise likely on a replacement centre believed to be Justin Olam.

If not Olam, the Saints still have salary cap space and a quote spot open to recruit a major new signing to boost their squad.

Olam would be the ideal target but there has also been interest in the Papua New Guinea centre from Warrington Wolves and Sam Burgess has hinted at potentially drafting in further new recruits for the 2024 Super League season season.

Hopoate’s future though remains unclear with him telling the press after the second test with England that he has not thought about life beyond the third test at Headingley. He could remain in Super League or depart for the NRL.

St Helens previously made the following tribute: “Hoppa has been a huge part of the Saints squad over the past two seasons after joining from NRL side Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs ahead of the 2022 season. Whilst unfortunate injuries have hampered his playing time, he has shown both his class and versatility on the field, whilst being a terrific addition to the team’s culture off it.

“Will departs the Club come the end of 2023, having played his part in the Saints securing a fourth Super League title in a row last September, and played in the historic World Club Challenge victory over Penrith Panthers in Australia this past February.

“From all of us at the Saints, best of luck with your next chapter, Hoppa.”

In terms of centres, the club already have Konrad Hurrell and have options in the outside backs with Tee Ritson extending his stay at the club. But this does appear to be an area the Saints need to strengthen.
