In 2015 Leeds Rhinos secured the treble with a Grand Final win over Wigan Warriors at Old Trafford after defeating Hull KR at Wembley but as they meet the Robins on Friday it is the Robins who have a chance of returning to Wembley whilst they and Leeds battle to see who can move level on points sixth.
Leeds have been far off the lofty heights they reached in the golden generation and they have had some issues in their efforts to get back to the top not helped by the pandemic.
However, despite their struggles one thing that has stayed strong is the fan base with Leeds having the largest average attendance of pretty much every Super League season even during their worst seasons.
As Leeds get ready for what they hope will be a rerun of the 2022 journey to Old Trafford, gary Hetherington has thanked fans for their support with a special message.
He firstly thanked the fans: “Firstly on behalf of Leeds Rhinos, I would like to thank you for your continued support of the club, especially as a valued member. Over the last three years we have all faced considerable challenges in the wake of the global pandemic and without your support, the future for our club would not be as bright as we hope it will be. ”
He then revealed the club’s amazing season ticket sales with the numbers back to the level of before the pandemic in a huge achievement for the club:
“Our membership levels for this season have returned to pre-pandemic levels and, through our community initiatives, we have enjoyed bumper crowds for our home fixtures against Catalans and Huddersfield, two games that traditionally have not been as well attended.
“Commercially, we are grateful to all our partners for their ongoing record levels of support, not just of the men’s first team but also across our organisation and allowing us to genuinely change lives through sport with the work of the Leeds Rhinos Foundation.”
The Rhinos are still a huge success off the field then but Hetherington is determined to being to deliver on the field.
