Super League club move to tie down star man despite exit reports

Catalans Dragons

One Super League club “have every intention” of re-signing one of their star players despite reports of a possible exit.

As we move into April, it means that the attention on all of the players going off contract at the end of the year intensifies more, as it will with each passing week.

Across Super League, a total of 30 overseas quota players are off contract at the end of the year with dozens of other non-quota players.

We’ve already seen plenty of reports about moves for next year with Serious About Rugby League among those to report that James Bell will be swapping St Helens for Hull FC as the Black and Whites continue in their aggressive recruiting.

It has recently been reported that former Hull FC man Chris Satae, who is one of those 30 overseas players off contract, has been shopped around to rival Super League clubs but it appears that there could be a twist in the tale.

Reports from French outlet L’Independent have stated that Catalans have “every intention of keeping” Satae, despite the fact his name had been banded about rival Super League clubs.

Satae is one of five overseas players that Catalans do not have contracted beyond the end of the 2025 season wit Bayley Sironen, Tariq Sims, Tevita Pangai Jr and Reimis Smith the other four.

Pangai Jr is on the radar of NRL clubs following his impressive start to the season and that interest is of no surprise given that he played State of Origin as recently as 2023 and is still in his prime years.

Two overseas players that Catalans could make ambitious bids to bring to Super League would be Daly Cherry-Evans and Charnze Niccoll-Klokstad with recent reports emerging about the futures of both men.

Niccoll-Klokstad is off contract at the end of the year and could reportedly knock back a new contract in favour of a move to Super League with Catalans Dragons a prime candidate for his signature given their likely need for a full-back, should Sam Tomkins retire, and plethora of quota spaces.

As for DCE, whose confirmed Manly exit caused shockwaves, a switch to Catalans is reportedly an option with the move possibly set to tee up the Queenslander to play with ex-New South Wales man Luke Keary.

Cherry-Evans was asked about Catalans and stated: “I’m not going to chat with other clubs yet. I’ll take my time. I’m also not going to engage with any clubs that I couldn’t see myself genuinely playing for so I won’t waste anyone’s time if I decide to play on.”
