Super League club issues hands off notice to NRL after interest in star player

George Williams

NRL side Wests Tigers are reportedly interested in Super League star George Williams.

After a tough 2022 season in a struggling Warrington Wolves side which finished 11th in the league, their lowest ever finish, Williams showed his class for England in the Rugby League World Cup and has now taken that form into the 2023 season and we are seeing the Williams of old.

Given a platform by Josh Drinkwater, the halfback is devastating teams and is second in the Man of Steel rankings.

However, the Wolves could face a fight to keep him at the club with the Daily Telegraph reporting that the Tigers are interested in the halfback for 2024.

The club are unsure about running with Luke Brooks in the halves moving forward despite letting former Man of Steel and Wigan Warriors and Salford Red Devils star Jackson Hastings leave for Newcastle Knights.

Thus, they are considering their options for the 2024 season but with a lack of halfbacks off contract in the NRL they may try and lure Williams down under.

Brooks meanwhile has been linked with a move to Leeds Rhinos by the Mole of Wide World of Sport.

Williams previously starred in the NRL for Canberra Raiders where he impressed alongside former Wigan teammate John Bateman.

Bateman has recently joined the Tigers perhaps giving Wests another key negotiation tool.

Despite all of this, Williams is contracted to the Wolves until the end of 2024.

Thus, the Tigers would have to pay a fee for him.

However, according to The Mole of Wide World of Sports, Williams is going nowhere with Warrington CEO Karl Fitzpatrick confirming that even a huge transfer fee would not be enough to tempt the Wolves into a release.

He said: “We rate George very highly and no way will he be leaving us any time soon.”
