Super League centre offered to rival clubs

Matthieu Laguerre in action for France against England. Super League

A Super League international has been offered to rival clubs, according to reports, and could be leaving ahead of 2025.

According to Aaron Bower, Catalans Dragons centre Matthieu Laguerre is likely to leave the Perpignan side.

The 25-year-old, from Marseille, has struggled to hold down a place in Super League since making his debut in 2021.

He’s only played eight games in the league this year, and hasn’t been offered a new contract beyond the end of this campaign.

Also capable of playing on the wing, he’s a good try-scorer, and memorably scored a hat-trick in 2022 against Castleford Tigers from centre.

However, being behind the likes of Arthur Romano and Matt Ikuvalu, and with the new signings for 2025, he was never likely to stay at the club.

Which Super League sides could he join?

One side certainly in need of a centre is Castleford Tigers, with Corey Hall on his way out.

Their weakness in the position was certainly highlighted when Sam Wood was injured. His performances had been covering this up for a while, but since then, Alex Mellor (a forward) has been the best-performing player to plug the gap, over Josh Hodson, Luis Johnson and Will Tate (who is admittedly only just back from a long-term injury.

At 6 foot 4, he’s an imposing figure, and may be what the Tigers need to help sort out their aerial struggles, particularly in defence.

Leigh Leopards have zero centres currently contracted for 2025, and despite Tesi Niu reportedly heading to the club, that’s still not enough, with Zak Hardaker gone and now, it seems, so is Ricky Leutele, linked with a surprise return to Huddersfield Giants.

These two sides seem the most likely destinations for the French international, who played against England this year and also represented his country at the World Cup in 2022.
