Super League attendances as semi-finals attract five-figure crowds

Super League

We now know that Hull KR and Wigan Warriors will be going head to head in Super League Grand Final.

Tickets are flying out for Saturday’s contest with the lower bowl at Old Trafford now completely sold out. As such, it seems sales are on course to surpass last year’s attendance of 68,173.

It’s set to be a cracker of a contest, too, with Super League’s best two teams going at it in what is a repeat of the 2024 showpiece event.

Wigan got there by beating Leigh Leopards at the Brick Community Stadium 18-6 and having won the last two Grand Finals, it seems safe to say that Wigan will make the journey to Old Trafford with confidence.

Hull KR edged out St Helens 20-12 on Saturday night and for them, hopes of a treble are still very much alive.

Super League attendances

Ticket allocations dominated the agenda in the build up to the clash, with Wigan and Derek Beaumont both releasing statements in the days prior to kick-off. At one stage it seemed as though there was a chance the game wouldn’t go ahead, with Wigan suggesting that Beaumont had made that suggestion.

The game came and went without incident, though, with 18,523 attending the Brick to watch. It is thought around 5,000 of those were Leigh fans, as per the allocation they were given and that’s the fourth highest home attendance Wigan have recorded this year.

Rovers have seen attendances soar this season with the addition of temporary seating in front of Craven Streat and on the East side of the ground. A total of 12,235 watched that game in east Hull, ensuring there was hardly a spare seat in the house.

It should also be noted that a record was set in the Women’s Grand Final at the Brick, with a crowd of 5,018 being recorded for that one.

Unfortunately, an attendance for the Championship Grand Final between York Knights and Toulouse Olympique has not been released just yet.

Attendances

Wigan Warriors 18-6 Leigh Leopards – 18,523

Hull KR 20-12 St Helens – 12,235

Wigan Warriors women 16-12 St Helens women – 5,018

6,615 empty seats, 26.32% of the stadium deliberately and wilfully left empty, at £26 a ticket that’s £171,990 thrown away. Is this sport that rich, that full of cash it can afford to throw away that much money? Fans were desperate to watch that game! Plus parking, programme, food, etc, added value sales, let’s say to £200,000, that’s a top player’s salary! It’s a chunk of the organisations electric bill, its operating costs covered, etc.

The denim final to the biggest game chose to lock fans out? Whereas I wonder if Rovers thought about sucking it up and playing at the MOM to get a 20,000 crowd. Who wouldn’t want to have been there? Rovers after their season, St Helens after that game versus Leeds! They had sold out signs up beforehand!

    Lions led by idiots.
