Super League attendances as season-low recorded and Hull KR top figures

The Super League attendances from Round Seven are in and despite three strong crowds, there is also the season low.

After a week off on account of the Challenge Cup quarter-finals, Super League was back this past weekend and almost 50,000 fans turned out to spectate the games.

Last week saw over 20,000 attend the Hull derby in the Challenge Cup, whilst Round Eight is expected to see two games hit that figure in the form of Hull FC v Hull KR and Wigan Warriors v St Helens.

Such attendances weren’t seen this week in Super League with the largest being just over 11,000, a mark that two games tallied with three of the six hitting five figures.

Sadly, two games failed to reach 5,000 fans whilst another only just surpassed that mark. A Super League season-low was also recorded as just over 3,500 fans attended the John Smith’s Stadium on Sunday to watch Huddersfield Giants take on Catalans Dragons.

The official crowd for that game was 3,638 and serves to highlight why Ken Davy is so keen to remove Huddersfield from the John Smith’s with the 20,000+ seat stadium doing the club no justice in an attempt to create atmosphere.

Of course, Catalans’ smaller away support impacts that figure, as does the fact Huddersfield are yet to win a game but those who did attend were loud throughout.

The first game of the week saw the second-lowest attendance as 4,159 watched Salford lose 28-0 to Leeds but once again, those who were there were spirited and they got to see a spirited performance from their depleted side.

Both of Friday night’s games surpassed 10,000 and whilst there is no official figure for the crowd at Craven Park, Sky Sports’ Brian Carney claimed that 11,300 were watching as Hull KR lost to Wigan Warriors. The game was a sell-out and with the temporary 1,000 seat stand also full, it is likely that the crowd matched those figures which would make it the biggest crowd of the round.

That same night, 10,108 watched St Helens beat Wakefield Trinity 26-14 whilst a crowd of 11,023 watched Hull FC upset Warrington the day after, the Black and Whites winning 28-16 to prove that they’re not just a flash in the pan.

Saturday’s other game at Castleford recorded an attendance of 5,807 as they lost 20-6 to Leigh Leopards.
