Round two of Super League is complete and the strong crowds continue to be a real positive as the season gets going.
It’s fair to say the opening round was a tough act to follow, with two golden point wins, an appearance from Michael Buffer and upsets aplenty shaping the first week of the new season. The last few days have carried plenty of drama and excitement, too, though, with Super League clubs doing their part once more.
Wakefield Trinity got the round underway on Thursday as they hosted Hull KR at Belle Vue, which looks very different compared to when the club were last in Super League. The new stand gives the stadium a completely different feel for those in attendance or watching at home on TV and it was packed out for Wakefield’s home opener.
A crowd of 8,065 watched Rovers edge out their hosts 14-12, with Wakefield going within a whisker of shocking last season’s Grand Finalists.
Hull FC attracted the biggest crowd of the week as 14,751 piled into the MKM Stadium to witness John Cartwright’s first home game in charge of the Black and Whites. It was a disappointing night for those Black and Whites supporters, though, with Wigan Warriors running riot.
Warrington Wolves renamed their stadium in Luke Littler’s honour on Friday as they hosted Catalans Dragons, with more than 11,000 watching that win. It was a big day for Salford Red Devils, too, following the completion of their takeover, but Paul Rowley’s side couldn’t treat them to a win over Leeds Rhinos.
St Helens swept aside Castleford Tigers at Wheldon Road in dominant fashion on Saturday night while Leigh Leopards built on their opening day win over Wigan Warriors by seeing off Huddersfield Giants at Leigh Sports Village.
