Round Six of Super League is behind us and among the host of things to discuss are the attendance figures across the six games.
The action started on Thursday night, when Hull FC travelled to and defeated Castleford Tigers, before concluding on a sunny but windy Sunday afternoon, which saw Hull KR and Wigan Warriors both smash the 50-point mark when winning with ease.
Two other games were incredibly tight with a further two also seeing comfortable victories for the away sides as the Super League table really starts to take shape now that we’ve just over a fifth of the way into the new campaign.
Super League will now have a week off as we venture into the Challenge Cup quarter-finals but before then, it’s time to assess the attendance figures of the most recent round of games with only two of the six matches hitting the landmark figure of 10,000 fans.
Round Six Super League attendance
Whilst only two of the six attendance figures hit the 10,000 mark, all barring one posted respectable crowds with one game coming close to 10,000 and another two coming close to the stadium’s capacity.
One of those was Thursday’s game between Castleford Tigers and Hull FC where almost 7,500 turned up with a large contingent of those fans making the trip from West Hull. Those travelling fans were rewarded with yet another win, whilst Castleford fans could be forgiven for not attending in the coming weeks after another poor home performance.
Friday night saw one very close game and another that was a blowout with the 5,000th and 5,001st games in Super League drawing crowds of 10,523 and 8,050 respectively.
Warrington edged Leeds Rhinos 16-14 in a game where plenty of focus was on referee Tom Grant, whilst Leigh were hammered 40-14 by Wakefield Trinity as Daryl Powell’s side saw their two England internationals Mike McMeeken and Tom Johnstone bag braces in a dominant performance.
Onto Saturday and the Stade Gilbert Brutus was bouncing with just shy of 10,000 in attendance as St Helens picked up their first Super League win in France since 2018, courtesy of two Jonny Lomax drop goals to reward the 700 travelling Saints fans.
Whilst Sunday’s matches were both blowout wins, they were vastly contrasting crowds with Wigan boasting over 14,000 and Huddersfield just over 5,000, almost half of whom were the travelling Hull KR supporters.
Those who made the journey from Hull saw their side run in nine tries with Mikey Lewis scoring a hat-trick, whilst it was Jake Wardle who scored three at the Brick Community Stadium as Wigan hammered a depleted Salford side.
