Super League attendance figures see Wigan Warriors v Warrington Wolves draw huge numbers

Round 19 of Super League could be looked back upon as one of the most significant of the season with Wigan Warriors being knocked off top spot by challengers Warrington Wolves, a game worthy of the highest attendance of the round.

Wigan hosted Warrington Wolves on the back of a loss against lowly Hull FC but Matt Peet’s side didn’t put in the response that had been expected as they fell to an ’embarrassing’ 40-4 defeat.

Such a margin of victory meant Warrington went top of Super League and because of results elsewhere, Wigan couldn’t even cling on to second with Hull KR’s 40-16 win over London good enough to demote Peet’s side to third.

The third game on that Friday night of extreme results saw perhaps the most significant of them all with St Helens slipping to a fifth straight league defeat for the first time since 1986 as Leigh Leopards ran in eight tries to win 46-4.

Paul Wellens’ side were dealt a further blow with a serious injury to Jack Welsby as their injury crisis worsened and they slipped to sixth, just two points ahead of Leeds Rhinos who kept their playoff hopes alive with a 34-6 win over Huddersfield Giants.

The two teams to leapfrog Saints into fourth and fifth respectively were Catalans who overcame Hull FC 24-16 and Salford who saw off Castleford 30-22 with sin bins costing Craig Lingard’s side.

So whilst the Round 19 Super League action was intense, what of the crowds to spectate it and the attendance figures?

It’s no surprise that the game between first and second in Super League drew the largest attendance with 15,764 watching Sam Burgess’ side storm atop the table. That game was the only one to record a five-figure crowd.

Close to five figures was the crowd at the Stade Gilbert Brutus as 9,214 turned out to witness the return of Sam Tomkins, albeit plenty were cheering against with a strong contingent of Hull FC fans making the trip to Perpignan.

Two Super League games failed to hit such high attendance figures, even failing to reach 5,000 with Huddersfield’s clash against Leeds drawing just 4,924 and worryingly Salford’s against Cas just over 3,000.

Hull KR don’t report their Super League attendance figures weekly but instead in a three-monthly report from their supporters’ meeting but they tend to be very well-supported at Craven Park.

Meanwhile, over 8,000 witnessed Leigh’s stellar performance against Saints as Adrian Lam’s side cling on desperately to any hopes of making the playoffs.

What about viewing figures? Also how do viewing figures compare to the Union offerings?

Ok, I’m biased, Union sends me to sleep, it’s so bloody boring. But is that borne out in viewing figures on a wider scale?
