Super League attendance as Hull KR announce incredible record

Hull KR Super League

Round 27 of Super League marked the end of the regular season and the attendance figures have now been confirmed.

There was lots on the line with only one of the six games being a ‘dead rubber’. That clash between Huddersfield Giants and Castleford Tigers was played on Thursday night with the Giants running out 34-10 winners.

It marked a positive end to the season for Huddersfield who have had a poor year but there’s optimism after owner Ken Davy announced plans to build a new stadium, one of a smaller capacity to reflect the Giants’ average Super League attendance.

Thursday night also saw Wigan wrap up the League Leaders Shield as they hammered a heavily rotated Salford side 64-0, meaning Hull KR played on Friday simply vying for second.

They ensured that as they beat Leeds Rhinos 26-16, ending Leeds’ Super League play-off hopes, as the Robins won to record their highest-ever Super League finish in front as they reported a club record attendance.

Warrington therefore finished third despite their 54-0 win over London Broncos but the game of the night came at the Leigh Sports Village as the Leopards secured their play-off place with an 18-12 win over St Helens.

That victory meant that Catalans could not make the play-offs so their 24-4 win over Hull FC on Saturday meant very little.

The Super League attendance figures for each game has now been confirmed.

Barring the Huddersfield and Castleford game, every Super League game in Round 27 boasted an impressive attendance figure. That game saw just over 4,000 attend, whereas every other game was close to the 10,000 figure.

Only Wigan and Warrington passed the 10,000 mark with Wigan seeing 15,589 turning up to witness them lift the League Leaders Shield, whilst 10,192 turned up at the Halliwell Jones Stadium to watch Warrington’s final game of the year.

There was likely more than 10,000 at Craven Park to witness Hull KR tie up second but the club do not reveal weekly Super League attendance figures. However, they have confirmed that they’ve recorded their record season attendance, with a whopping average of 9,883, suggesting Friday’s game will have cleared 10,000.

Almost 10,000 turned up at each of the Leigh Sports Village and the MKM Stadium meaning that the total Super League attendance figure for Round 27 (assuming Hull KR hit the 10,000 mark) was around the 60,000 mark, a very impressive figure.

So almost a top 6 football club attendance for a single match? It beggars belief, the product is better, it’s more exciting, quicker, brutal, unrelenting, a draw in Super League is a thrill a second until the final hooter compared to 22 multimillionaires kicking a ball about. The failure to grow the sport is a condemnation of the RFL. Since a bright period in the 1990s the game has stagnated. Sell, or better still just hand, the whole lot to the NRL. They do a lot better managing the sport.
