Super League and NRL put on red alert after club dithers on new contract for 26-year-old star

NRL Round 14 Preview

Super League and NRL clubs have been put on red alert after St George Illawarra Dragons have stalled in their contract offer to utility man Jack Bird.

Rival clubs Down Under have been gathering in interest as Bird’s management continues to hold talks with the Dragons’ hierarchy.

St George performed poorly in the 2021 NRL season, finishing in 11th with just eight wins from 24 games, but Bird was arguably one of the club’s best players.

And, the 26-year-old has revealed that he does want to stay in Sydney near family and friends despite offers from elsewhere.

Bird’s story has been an inspirational one after suffering two ACL injuries in back-to-back years, but he made his presence felt at St George in 2021, making 22 appearances and scoring four tries and kicking six goals.

A proven Grand Final winner with the Cronulla Sharks in 2016, Bird scored 17 tries in 67 appearances in a three-year period before moving to the Brisbane Broncos ahead of the 2018 season.

However, his time at the Broncos was cut short by injury and he registered just 17 appearances.

Bird has also made five appearances for the New South Wales Blues in the State of Origin.
