Super League aim to confirm Toronto replacement by mid-December

Super League have revealed the initial details of the application process for the vacant 12th spot in Super League, and are aiming to make a decision by December 16.

The spot is available following the decision to expel Toronto from the competition, after they pulled out of the 2020 season early due to numerous financial and logistical issues.

Their replacement will be decided by a seven-strong panel, headed by Lord Jonathan Caine, a Conservative peer who is Vice Chair of Rugby League’s All-Party Parliamentary Group, and including three members each from the RFL and Super League Europe.

While the decision deadline has been set for Wednesday 16 December, that could be extended in certain circumstances.

The deadline for applications to be submitted, meanwhile, is the Morning of Monday 30 November.

Initial criteria has also been drawn up, and states that applicant clubs must have competed in Super League, or have finished in the top six of the Championship, in either 2018 or 2019.

The clubs eligible to submit an application, therefore, are: London Broncos, Widnes Vikings, Toulouse Olympique, Halifax RLFC, Featherstone Rovers, Leigh Centurions, York City Knights and Bradford Bulls.
