Huddersfield Giants have issued a positive update after their Super League academy clash against St Helens was abandoned after just 20 minutes due to a ‘serious injury’.
The Giants were on the road against St Helens on Wednesday night but both clubs confirmed on social media that the game has been abandoned as a result of a ‘serious injury’.
Huddersfield updated fans via X, stating: “Tonight’s Academy Game has been abandoned after 20 minutes with the score at 0-0 due to a serious injury suffered by a Huddersfield Giants player
“The player is being medically assessed at the moment and we will update as soon as we can.”
That of course led to understandable concern but there has been a positive update on Thursday morning, with the Giants revealing that young half-back Thomas Burns has been released from hospital following the incident.

Burns was one of 12 scholars to graduate and progress to the Huddersfield Giants’ academy in September 2025. Prior to joining the Giants, he had represented amateur club Greetland Allrounders.
The update issued by the Giants confirmed that the youngster had been released following the advice of consultants.
It read: “Thomas Burns was discharged from Hospital yesterday evening, after a consultation he was discharged and returned home!”
That’s welcome news for the Giants and all the family and friends of Burns, who has had a strong campaign representing the reserves. He picked up the Man of the Match gong in the Giants’ defeat back in June with Burns scoring late on in that game.
St Helens have also wished Burns well via social media.
