Kyle Amor only able to name 15-man squad for struggling Whitehaven

Championship strugglers Whitehaven have only been able to name a 15-man squad for their crucial bottom-of-the-table relegation battle against Dewsbury Rams tomorrow.

It’s been a whirlwind week for Whitehaven since their victory over Doncaster last Sunday. Just minutes after that last-minute win, head coach Jonty Gorley stepped down from his role citing an ‘untenable’ situation at the club.

Former St Helens star and proud Cumbrian Kyle Amor was then appointed as the club’s head coach for the remainder of the season but after driving up to meet with his players, Amor found a squad that was on strike.

That was resolved with Amor confirming on Thursday evening that the club would fulfil their game against the Championship’s bottom-side Dewsbury Rams, and endeavour to finish the season.

They have now named their squad for that game on Sunday but have only been able to name 15 players, two shy of the standard 17-man squad.

Dewsbury might have only won once this season but with Whitehaven playing with just 15 men, it’s set to be one of their biggest tests of the season as yet.

Kyle Amor spoke on the club’s YouTube channel after naming his squad and he explained the situation.

The Whitehaven boss stated: “Unfortunately, we’ve got a couple of absentees who are unavailable for selection but we focus on what we do have. I’ve said it all week and will continue to say it, we’ve got a committed bunch of men that are in and for the cause and we’ve just got to try and put our best foot forward.”

“It’s a tough place to go at Dewsbury. We have all the excuses ready for us, we can roll over and say whatever we want but I don’t think that’s going to happen. I know they’ll try their absolute best and we just have to see where that takes us.

“The players have given me hope and given me a big boost in what I’m doing taking this on. I’ve got their backing here, these guys are tough guys and good guys.”

Whitehaven take on Dewsbury at 3:00 pm on Sunday afternoon.
